Rock Covers by Taschen: Vol 2
"Dynamite!" - Ike & Tina Turner
An early release on New York's Sue label, Dynamite! nails the symbolic and interpersonal tension between these two performers. Tina, cocksure in a mink coat, hip thrust forward, turns away from a leering image of Ike, an spectral figure of surveillance on the cover. The label's logo, created by co-founder Juggy Murray, features a silhouette of his daughter, with a star replacing her birthmark.
"Licensed To Ill" - Beastie Boys
"The Beastie Boys were just a bunch of little guys and I wanted us to have a Beastie Boys jet. I wanted to embrace and somehow distinguish, in a sarcastic way, the larger-than-life rock 'n' roll lifestyle, the excesses and destruction."
"Are You Experienced" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
This release from the Jimi Hendrix Experience was a full-tilt psychedelic experience which made notable se of recording techniques and effects, making it very much a studio album. The Indian-inspired cover was an assemblage of a small painting by Roger Law, based on a photo of the band by Karl Ferris and laid over a Hindu devotional poster of Viraat Purushan-Vishnuroopam.
